Official blog lists services and products that are being closed or phased out
Claiming technological changes creating “tremendous opportunities,” Google’s official blog names several products which will be discontinued to better “focus” on those that are impactful for Google users. In the fall, Google began a “spring clean” that has led to closing or combining more than 30 products in an effort to streamline offerings. The Fall round of cleaning included shutting down Desktop, Fast Flip, Google Notebook, and Google Subscribed Links. The Summer clean includes: Google says that closing products “always involves tough choices, but we do think very hard about each decision and its implications for our users.” Some are considered bold moves that have significant impact on how users will interact on the internet. Several advances in computer architecture make new PCs particularly attractive this year.
If you're cheap like I am and something goes wrong with your PC's hardware, the temptation is to have it fixed. My advice: Don't. Buy a new one, at least if your computer is old enough to be running Windows XP. Computer designs improve so quickly that a 3-year-old PC looks long in tooth, and a 5-year-old is just waiting to die. You would be lucky to get $100 if you sold a typical 5-year-old machine. So why pay a repair technician $150 or $250 to diagnose and swap out a bad hard drive or video card or memory? Even an entry-level PC for $400 will typically outperform that computer, and will have all-new components, a more-secure operating system and a warranty. The latest iPad comes loaded with features -- but it doesn't come with a new name. Instead of referring to the device as the "iPad 3," Cook simply called it "the new iPad." The terminology is echoed on Apple's website. The new iPad isn't exactly a ground-up overhaul of the iPad 2, but it boasts some impressive upgrades. The new 3.1 million-pixel Retina Display will …

Dead at 56, the Apple co-founder's vision of accessible technology created a revolution in computing.
Steve Jobs, visionary co-founder of Apple, died Wednesday at the age of 56. He had stepped down as Apple's chair in late August, citing various health issues that he said impacted his ability to "meet my duties and expectations," according to a CBS News report. In his years at Apple, Jobs led the company to the forefront of a technological revolution. Products like the MacBook, iPod, iPhone and iPad changed the way average consumers interacted with computers. Indeed, to a large extent, Apple changed the way people lived their lives. Take me, for instance. I'm writing this on a MacBook Pro. And while it's true that I could write stories on any computer -- or, for that matter, on a typewriter -- Apple has nonetheless left an indelible mark …
