A child named Lindsey inspired Kara Billingham to trek from New York to Savannah. Through Lindsey, Billingham learned there was a need in Coastal Georgia – a need Billingham realized she could help fill. In 2008, that germ of an idea grew into Lindsey’s Place, a camp program for young people with special needs. Lindsey Hart, now an adult, was born with cerebral palsy. She made the trip from Savannah to New York every year to attend a camp program there. “My husband and I knew Lindsey Hart when she was a camper in New York. She flew from Savannah to New York every summer, because there was nothing in Savannah,” said Billingham, the camp’s co-founder and director. “So along with the Hart Family, I founded Lindsey’s Place in 2008.” Lindsey’s …

By Spc. Emily Knitter 1st Heavy Brigade Combat Team Turning onto a long gravel driveway, you are immediately greeted by a red barn with a white fence, green rolling pastures and horses grazing. Standing nearby are two cute cottages with white shutters and an inviting atmosphere. As you get closer, you can hear the laughter from a child being pushed on a swing set. It looks like a setup most children could only wish to live in, but for the children currently living there, it means their life has been anything but perfect. This ranch is home to the Gabriel's House, a non-profit resident childcare facility in Hinesville, Ga., which focuses on trying to keep sibling groups together as they enter the foster care system. "We try to provide the …
