Should the Army Pull its Ads from Limbaugh's Show?

In the wake of the radio personality's inflammatory comments about a contraception advocate, the Army has joined more than 140 other advertisers in pulling their sponsorship.

The U.S. Army has joined more than 140 other companies in pulling its advertising from political commentator Rush Limbaugh's radio show, according to a Raw Story report. Advertisers began deserting the radio show in droves after Limbaugh called birth control activist Sandra Fluke a "slut" and a "prostitute" on his show last month. He later followed up by suggesting she should film herself having sex so others could watch the video online. Limbaugh apologized after losing some sponsors for the show, but advertisers have continued to withdraw their support for the program. Besides the Army, other high-profile defectors include Sony, Geico, British Petroleum and McDonald's. Although the Army has dropped its sponsorship, Limbaugh's show …

Mr. Straub, you incorrectly state that "a good number of the pills are placebos". Only 5 pills of the 4 week prescription are in fact placebos and they are designed to trigger the monthly cycle.. VIEWPOINT: Limbaugh's Comments Reprehensible

The talk radio host's recent attacks on contraception advocate Sandra Fluke crossed the line, and his show has no place on the taxpayer-funded American Forces Network.

I usually don't get political in this space. I am first and foremost a journalist, and journalism's most important watchword is objectivity. That means you don't take sides. It means you report the facts and let the readers draw their own conclusions. It means you stay above the fray. But I'm also an editor, and occasionally, by god, it's time for a little editorializing. Case in point: Talk radio icon Rush Limbaugh's recent remarks about contraception advocate Sandra Fluke. Sandra Fluke is a Georgetown Law School student who testified to Congress about her belief that the school's health-insurance plan should cover contraceptives, although Georgetown is a Catholic-run school. Limbaugh presents himself as the primary media spokesperson for the Republican party. How can a person whose actions are a complete contradiction of Christian values (drug use, multiple marriages, and from his comment a consumer of pornography) represent a party that claims Christian values as a core belief and platform?
