Know someone who does great work in the Fort Stewart area? We want to tell his or her story!
Do you know someone who does great work for charity? Someone who overcame huge odds to get where he is today? Someone who inspires others? Well, here at Fort Stewart Patch, we want to know that person too. We're starting a new, monthly feature called "Greatest Person," which will tell the stories of people in our community whose examples inspire us. It could be a military hero; it could be a charitable volunteer. It could be a great teacher or a business owner who goes above and beyond to give back to the community. It could even be a senior citizen whose wisdom instructs us or a school kid who accomplished something amazing. The point is, we want to tell their stories, and we want you to let us know if there's a "Greatest Person" living …

These pieces of functionality are works of art that convey a message of love, caring, and hope. The Coastal Georgia Quilt Guild carries on this tradition by making quilts for various charities. The Brunswick library is displaying the guild’s latest charity quilts until Jan. 31. There are approximately 20 quilts on display at the library. The Coastal Georgia Quilt Guild made the quilts for the Quilts for Kids charity, a non-profit organization that provides quilts to children with life threatening illnesses and those in need. Operation Gratitude sends care packages to deployed service members.
Everyone gets stressed this time of year. There are lots of gifts to shop for, purchase, wrap and ship. Parties need to be planned and attended. Holiday cards must be selected, stamped and mailed. It's far too easy to end up overwhelmed and sometimes even unhappy, feeling like the holidays are a chore and there's simply not enough time in the day. I know my holiday season is far less stressful than many of my friends. I don't have a big shopping list, don't need to ship presents and usually try to take off over New Year's and go somewhere warm. I'm lucky, I know that. I'm also blessed: My family is healthy and happy and out of harm's way. Far too many of our local military families can't say the same. This past weekend I happened upon an …

Kroger is helping to "can" hunger this holiday season by accepting donations to the Manna House food bank, according to a Coaastal Courier report. Between now and Dec. 24, Hinesville Kroger customers can donate $1, $3 or $5 at check-out to benefit needy families. All Hinesville donations will benefit Manna House, according to the Courier. “The Can Hunger campaign provides Kroger associates and customers with the opportunity to give back to their community during the holiday season,” said Glynn Jenkins, director of communications and public relations for Kroger’s Atlanta Division in a press release. “Small monetary donations can make a large impact in feeding those who are less fortunate within the community.”

A night of giving thanks, prayer and offering for the homeless made for a very special evening.
The Mayor's Annual Community Service of Songs, Prayer and Thanksgiving was an inspirational and uplifting event that took place at the main chapel on Fort Stewart. Pastors, military and political leaders all spoke to a crowd gathered to celebrate "A Thankful Homecoming", which was the theme of this year's event. Thanks was given for the soldiers return to a blessed home for the holidays, and remembering those still deployed. Pastor Richard Wright, Hinesville First United Methodist Church, opened up the evening and other pastors followed reading scriptures or saying a prayer. Pastor Tommy Crutchfield, Life United Pentecostal Church, really got the crowd off its feet with his "Words of Peace" speech. Not to be outdone, State Rep. Al Williams…

The Hinesville Chapter of the Lions Club held their first pancake breakfast fundraiser at Applebee's to raise money for the vision and hearing impaired. The members of the Lions Club helped seat, serve and bus tables while Bill Schulte, Applebee's manager, flipped the pancakes. The Hinesville Lion Club has been around for 70 years, and its members include citizens from our community. Retha Coleman, president, and member Pat Powell were more than excited to educate me on all things Lions Club. Vance McSwain, who owns Mac's Optical Shop, in another life would have made a great server! Secretary Donnie Appleman is an optometrist at Fort Stewart's Winn Hospital, Larry Stokes works at Trinity Real Estate here in Hinesville, and Jevon …

Sunday Highway 84 was full of motorcycles riding for a great cause.
Liberty Propane owner Hank Stacy and niece, Kelly Klotz, hosted the 3rd annual Toys for Tots Bike Ride and auction in Hinesville Sunday. "We were asked to host three years ago and it was so much fun and successful," Klotz said. "It just keeps growing and we want to keep on doing it. It feels great being a part of such a good cause". Everyone gathered at the Liberty County Recreation Department on Highway 84. The entry fee was either $10 or an unwrapped toy. Participants could use any street legal vehicle on the ride, but most of them rode on motorcycles. After a prayer at noon, the riders put on their helmets and made a grand entrance onto Highway 84. After working up an appetite on the ride participants could purchase lunch provided …

Participants could also purchase $1 tickets for a 50/50 drawing. (Winner gets half the pot.) A "dice run" is a motorcycle ride with five stops. The fifth annual Cycles for Charity event took place Saturday at the Liberty County Recreation Department in Hinesville. Plenty of leather-clad bikers arrived to participate in the motorcycle and car ride to support the Mayor's Motorcade Program, which benefits the patients at Georgia Regional Hospital, 1915 Eisenhower Dr., Savannah. The riders arrived at 9 a.m. to register. Everyone gathered in the clubhouse, where the mayor of Hinesville, James Thomas Jr., thanked everyone for coming and explained how important the charity is for the mental health patients at Georgia Regional Hospital. He led a short prayer asking for safety for all the riders, and then they were off! The bikes roared out of the parking lot, led by the mayor in his …
