Soldiers, civilians, police and firefighters came together Friday for the annual Freedom Walk to commemorate the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

Several hundred people gathered Friday to show their appreciation for our American heroes and to remember those who have fallen in the line of duty. The sixth annual Freedom Walk took place on and around Cottrell Field on Fort Stewart. The event began with the singing of the National Anthem as participants lined the bleachers. Col. Kevin Milton, garrison commander, Hinesville Mayor James Thomas, and Mr. John McIver, the chairman of the Liberty County Commission, shared a brief word with the crowd before the walk began. We were encouraged to remember: Remember the innocent people who died in the 9/11 attacks and those who fought to protect them. Thomas stated that you can't kill an idea, and that's what America is.
