Everyone knows that replacement referees in the NFL—paid $3,000 a game—have made doubtful calls in the first three weeks, including one on Monday Night Football that outraged even the presidential candidates. Fewer folks are aware of the reasons behind the lockout of expert refs. A sticking point is pensions: Referees want to keep their traditional pensions; the league is pushing for a 401(k) plan. The question for NFL fans who support the referees’ union is whether they also back traditional pensions.
